É em Berlim que grande parte da história contemporânea pode ser vista. A cidade já foi capital do Reino da Prússica, do Império Alemão, da República de Weimar e do Terceiro Reich. Passou por duas guerras mundiais e uma guerra fria. A maior destruição da cidade ocorreu durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945). Após a Segunda Guerra Mundial foi dividida por um Muro de Berlim em Alemanha Oriental e Ocidental. Sendo reunificada em 1990, quando passou a ser capital da Alemanha.
De 1990 até hoje Berlim vem passando por constantes mudanças urbanísticas, com construções e restaurações de edifícios. Isso é visto claramente em Berlim, com suas incontáveis gruas e os terrenos vazios na sua região central (local onde passava o muro). A cidade ainda possui o peso da guerra, entretanto caminhando por suas ruas é possível sentir que os prédios bombardeados, os pedaços do muro que separou muitas famílias vão aos poucos se incorporando a uma nova etapa da história que está sendo reescrita. Berlim começa a ter uma cara de capital do mundo, onde inúmeras nacionalidades e diversos estilos vão se mesclando em um só lugar. Criando o novo sem nunca esquecer o velho.
